The Med/Surg Registered Nurse provides care in an acute care medical/surgical unit within a teaching and research environment. The RN delivers direct clinical care and supports services related to spinal cord injuries, telemetry, orthopedics, medicine, oncology, neurology, acute rehabilitation, general surgery, and post-operative care for veteran patients.

Key Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care
- Perform patient assessments and monitor patient condition
- Administer medications and IV therapy
- Provide telemetry monitoring
- Perform wound therapy including wound vac and dressing changes
- Provide tracheostomy care and chest tube management
- Perform NGT insertion and other required procedures
- Monitor patient findings, report conditions, and treat applicable issues
- Respond to emergency situations including cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Clinical Procedures & Competencies
- IV insertions
- Thoracentesis
- Paracentesis
- Lumbar puncture
- Twelve lead EKG
- Foley catheter insertion and discontinuation
- Doppler pressure
- Orthostatic blood pressure
- Blood transfusion
- Blood draws
- Drug administration using Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA)
- Bladder irrigation
Care Coordination
- Coordinate care with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- Manage admissions, discharges, and internal and external patient transfers
- Delegate tasks to assistive personnel
- Support patient transport when necessary
Documentation & Professional Practice
- Document nursing care in the electronic medical record
- Follow emergency response procedures
- Maintain clinical competency across areas of nursing care
Required Qualifications
- BLS and ACLS certifications accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Minimum of three (3) years of current nursing experience, including background in Med/Surg
- BSN preferred at a ACEN and CCNE school
