We are looking for detail-oriented and patient-focused Phlebotomist with experience performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection for patients ranging from minimally ill to critically ill. Skilled in managing difficult draws and conducting therapeutic phlebotomy (up to 500 mL) while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and compliance with regulatory standards. Committed to delivering high-quality care and exceptional service to Veterans.

Key Responsibilities & Achievements

Specimen Collection & Patient Identification

  • Perform routine and complex venipuncture, fingersticks, and blood cultures for inpatient and outpatient populations.
  • Utilize strict patient identification protocols (full name and SSN verification) to ensure specimen accuracy and eliminate labeling errors.
  • Successfully manage difficult draws with minimal patient discomfort and high first-attempt success rates.

Specimen Processing & Laboratory Operations

  • Process samples accurately through centrifugation, decanting, and aliquoting to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Accession specimens into laboratory information systems (VISTA/CPRS) with precision and timeliness.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure work areas remain clean, sterile, and inspection-ready.

Patient Education & Customer Service

  • Provide clear instructions for 24-hour urine collections and other at-home specimen procedures to ensure compliance and accurate results.
  • Deliver professional, compassionate customer service while supporting Veterans and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Strictly adhere to infection control standards, universal precautions, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to adverse patient reactions, including syncope and nausea.
  • Uphold laboratory quality standards to support accurate diagnostic outcomes.

Administrative & Clerical Support

  • Manage incoming calls, distribute laboratory reports, and support daily laboratory workflow operations.


Key Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year
  • Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and proper specimen collection/processing techniques.
  • Physical Requirements: Regular, recurring physical exertion including standing for long periods, bending, walking, and lifting.
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday 8-4:30
